How Painful Is Permanent Makeup? Here's the Honest Truth
If there's one question that holds people back from booking their first permanent makeup appointment, it's this one: "Is it going to hurt?" I get it, the idea of a tattoo on your face sounds intimidating, and your mind can easily jump to worst-case scenarios. So let's just talk about it openly, because the honest answer is probably a lot more reassuring than you're expecting.
First, Let's Address the Elephant in the Room
Yes, permanent makeup is a cosmetic tattoo. And yes, some level of sensation is involved. But here's what I want you to know: the experience at Andrea Beauty Ink is specifically designed to keep you as comfortable as possible from the moment you sit down to the moment you walk out. Comfort isn't an afterthought here, it's a priority.
Some artists choose to do the first pass without any numbing, and many clients do find that tolerable. But that's just not how I do things. I believe you should be relaxed and at ease throughout your entire appointment, not just powering through.
How Numbing Works at Andrea Beauty Ink
Here's exactly what you can expect when it comes to managing discomfort during your procedure:
Before we begin, I apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. This gives it plenty of time to fully absorb and do its job before I ever start. By the time we're ready to begin, the area is already well-numbed.
During the procedure, after each pass, I apply a secondary numbing gel that works almost instantly on open skin. This means the numbing is continuously refreshed throughout the appointment, so you stay comfortable from start to finish, not just at the beginning.
The result? Most clients describe the sensation as nothing more than a light scratching on the skin. Mild, manageable, and honestly not a big deal once you're in the chair and relaxed.
And here's my favorite thing to tell first-timers: many clients actually fall asleep during their appointment. That's how comfortable the experience can be! If that's not a testament to how well the numbing works, I don't know what is.
Does It Vary by Service?
It can, slightly. Different areas of the face have different sensitivity levels, and I always give clients a realistic heads-up on what to expect for each specific service. On the pain scale, brow procedures typically rate around a 1 to 2 out of 10, eyeliner a bit higher at around 4 to 5 out of 10 given how sensitive the eye area is, and lip services around a 3 to 4 out of 10. These are general ranges, everyone's pain tolerance is different, and the numbing protocol helps bring those numbers down significantly for most people.
A Few Tips to Help You Feel Your Best on Appointment Day
Beyond the numbing, there are a few simple things you can do to set yourself up for the most comfortable experience possible:
Eat a good meal beforehand — coming in on an empty stomach can make you feel lightheaded and more sensitive
Avoid caffeine on the day of your appointment — it can increase sensitivity and cause more bleeding, which affects pigment retention
Avoid booking for when on your period - being on your period increases sensitivity
Skip alcohol for 24 hours before your procedure for the same reason
Come in relaxed — the more at ease you are, the smoother everything goes
The Bottom Line
Fear of pain is one of the most common reasons people put off permanent makeup, and in my experience, it's almost always the thing clients laugh about afterward. The procedure is so much more comfortable than people anticipate, and the results make every second worth it.
