Switching Permanent Makeup Artists? Here's Why It's Not Considered a Touch-Up

If you've had permanent makeup done before, whether it was brows, eyeliner, or lips, and you're considering coming to a new artist, first of all, welcome. It takes courage to seek out a fresh set of eyes on previous work, and it's a decision many people make for all kinds of reasons. Maybe you moved, maybe your previous artist is no longer practicing, or maybe you simply weren't happy with your results and you're ready for something better.
Whatever brought you here, I want to be upfront with you about something important: if you've had permanent makeup done by another artist, your appointment at Andrea Beauty Ink will be priced and treated as a new service, not a touch-up. I know that might be surprising to hear, so I want to take the time to explain exactly why, because it's a policy rooted entirely in honesty, quality, and your best interest.
Touch-Ups Are Designed for Existing Clients
When I offer annual touch-ups to my existing clients, I'm working with results that I created from scratch. I know exactly what pigments I used, how deeply they were applied, what technique was used for that specific client's skin type, and how their skin has historically responded to the procedure. That knowledge makes a touch-up appointment relatively straightforward — I'm simply refreshing and maintaining work I'm already intimately familiar with.
A touch-up, by definition, is maintenance. It assumes a known starting point.
When a new client comes in with work done by another artist, there is no known starting point. Every permanent makeup artist works differently, and the variables at play are significant.
The Unknown Factor: Pigments and Techniques
One of the biggest challenges with working over someone else's permanent makeup is that pigments are not universal. There are dozens of pigment brands on the market, each with different formulations, undertones, and behaviors in the skin. Some pigments fade true to color; others shift over time, turning orange, red, blue, or grey as they age. Without knowing exactly what was used on your skin, it's impossible to predict how a new layer of pigment will interact with what's already there.
Beyond pigments, technique matters enormously. Different artists use different machines, different needle configurations, and different depths of application. All of these factors affect how the skin has been altered and how it will receive new work. What looks like a simple color refresh on the surface can be far more complex underneath.
Taking on previous work without this information isn't just challenging — it's a risk I take seriously, because the outcome ultimately has your name on it.
Shape and Color Correction Takes More Time, Not Less
Here's something that surprises a lot of people: working over existing permanent makeup is often more time-consuming than starting fresh on skin that has never been tattooed — what we call virgin skin.
When previous work has faded unevenly, shifted in color, or was applied in a shape that doesn't suit the client's face, correction is required before anything new can be added. Shape correction means carefully re-mapping the brows to create balance and symmetry, often while working around or blending out lines that are already there. Color correction means neutralizing unwanted undertones before building a new, clean tone on top.
Both of these processes require significant skill, time, and product. A standard touch-up appointment simply isn't structured, in time, preparation, or pricing, to accommodate that level of work.
It's About Protecting You and Your Results
I want to be clear: this policy isn't about turning away clients who've had work done elsewhere. Quite the opposite: I genuinely love helping people who are unhappy with previous permanent makeup find their way to results they're excited about. Correction work can be incredibly rewarding, and seeing a client finally feel great about their brows or lips after a frustrating experience with another artist is one of the most satisfying things I do.
But doing that work well requires approaching it with the full attention, time, and pricing structure of a new service. Cutting corners on correction work, rushing through it, underpricing it, or treating it like a routine maintenance appointment, would ultimately hurt the client. And that's never something I'm willing to do.
What to Expect If You're Coming From Another Artist
If you're coming to me with existing permanent makeup, here's what the process looks like:
Before your appointment, I encourage you to reach out with photos of your current results. This gives me the opportunity to assess what we're working with and have an honest conversation about what's achievable, how many sessions it might take, and what the process will look like for your specific situation. If the photos are not clear enough for me to assess your skin and the ink still in it, I will schedule an in person complementary consultation.
At your appointment, we'll go through the same thorough consultation process as any new client, taking measurements, discussing your goals, drawing the shape together, and making sure you approve everything before we begin. Depending on the condition of the existing work, we may also discuss whether saline removal or fading is recommended before adding new pigment.
After your appointment, the same healing timeline applies: 10 to 14 days for initial healing, and 6 to 8 weeks for full healing before your perfecting session.
The Bottom Line
Great permanent makeup starts with a thorough, honest foundation. Whether you're coming in for the very first time or looking to refresh work done by another artist, my commitment to you is the same: to give you results that are safe, beautiful, and done right.
If you have questions about your existing permanent makeup or want to talk through what correction might look like for you, I'd love to hear from you.
