How Long Does Permanent Makeup Actually Last? Here's What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions I get from new clients is: "How long is this going to last?" And it's a great question — because when you're investing in a procedure like permanent makeup, you want to know exactly what you're signing up for. The honest answer is: it depends. But don't worry, I'm going to break it all down for you so you know exactly what to expect before you ever sit in my chair.

Let's talk longevity.

First Things First — "Permanent" Is a Little Misleading

I know, the word permanent is right there in the name, and yet here I am telling you it doesn't last forever. Here's the thing: permanent makeup is a cosmetic tattoo, which means the pigment is deposited into second layer of the skin, called dermis. Unlike a traditional body tattoo that can go deeper and tends to stick around for decades, permanent makeup sits closer to the surface, and also uses different kind of pigments, which means it naturally fades over time as your skin renews itself.

So think of it less like a tattoo you'll have for life, and more like a long-lasting enhancement that needs occasional refreshing to stay looking its best. Most permanent makeup lasts anywhere from 1 to 2 years  and a lot of factors play into where on that spectrum you'll land.

What Affects How Long It Lasts?

Your Skin Type

This is probably the biggest factor. Oily skin tends to break down pigment faster than dry or normal skin. If your skin produces a lot of oil, you may find your results fade more quickly and require touch-ups sooner. Mature or thinner skin, on the other hand, often holds pigment beautiful and longer. It's one of the reasons I assess your skin type carefully before every procedure, it helps us set realistic expectations from the start.

Sun Exposure

The sun is not your permanent makeup's friend. UV rays break down pigment over time, causing it to fade faster and sometimes shift in color. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, wearing SPF on the treated area (once fully healed, of course) will make a real difference in how long your results last.

Your Skincare Routine

Certain skincare ingredients — like retinol, glycolic acid, and other exfoliants — can accelerate fading. These are powerful ingredients that speed up skin cell turnover, which is great for anti-aging but not so great for keeping your pigment intact. This doesn't mean you have to give up your skincare routine; it just means being mindful of what you're applying directly over treated areas.

How Well You Follow Aftercare Instructions

The healing phase is crucial. How you care for your skin in the first 1 to 2 weeks after your procedure has a direct impact on how well the pigment sets and how long it lasts. I always send my clients home with an aftercare kit and detailed instructions — and following them closely really does make a difference.

The Service Itself

Different procedures have slightly different staying power. Brow services like Nano Brows, Ombre, and Combo Brows generally hold up well over time. Lip Blush is gorgeous but tends to fade a bit faster given how much movement and moisture the lip area experiences daily. Eyeliner tends to be one of the longer-lasting services. However, it also depends if you suffer from a lot allergies and watery eyes, that can also affect the longevity of the eyeliner. We'll always chat about what's realistic for your specific procedure.

The Touch-Up Timeline

Here's how I think about it: every permanent makeup service has two phases.

Phase 1: The Perfecting Session (6–8 Weeks After Your Initial Appointment)

This is included in the price of every service I offer, and it's not optional. It's essential. After your initial procedure, your skin goes through a healing process and the pigment settles. Sometimes certain areas fade more than others, or we decide we want to adjust the color slightly. The perfecting session is where we fine-tune everything and make sure you're completely happy with your results. Think of your first appointment as the foundation, and the touch-up as where we put on the finishing touches.

Phase 2: Annual Maintenance (Every 9–18 Months)

Once you're fully healed and loving your results, you'll want to come back for a maintenance touch-up every 9 to 18 months depending on how your skin holds the pigment. This is where we refresh the color, sharpen any edges that have softened, and keep everything looking as good as the day you walked out of your appointment. Life's too short to let those beautiful brows fade away! These annual touch-ups are $250 and are available for existing clients only.

Signs It's Time for a Touch-Up

Not sure if it's time to come back in? Here are a few things to watch for:

  • The color looks noticeably lighter or more washed out than it used to

  • The shape has lost some of its definition or crispness

  • You're starting to fill in your brows or lips with makeup again on a daily basis

  • It's been over 18 months since your last session

If any of these sound familiar, it's probably time to book!

The Bottom Line

Permanent makeup is one of the best investments you can make in your daily routine — and with a little maintenance, it just keeps giving. When you factor in how much time and money you'll save on products and your morning routine, annual touch-ups are absolutely worth it.
