What to Expect During the Healing Process After Permanent Makeup

So you've just had your permanent makeup done. Congratulations! You're officially on your way to effortless brows (or liner, or lips) every single morning. But before you get to enjoy those fully healed, gorgeous results, there's a healing process to get through first. And I want to make sure you know exactly what to expect so nothing catches you off guard.
Let's walk through it together.

The First 10–14 Days: The Flaking Phase
Right after your procedure, the treated area will look bolder and more intense than your final result. This is completely normal! I promise! Your skin has just been through a procedure, and it needs time to recover. In the first week or two, you'll likely notice some flaking or peeling as the outer layer of skin sheds and the pigment begins to settle in underneath.
This part can feel a little nerve-wracking, especially if the color looks like it's fading dramatically. Stay calm. This is all part of the process! The color will come back as your skin finishes healing. The golden rule during this phase: do not pick at the flaking skin.
I know it's tempting, but picking can pull out pigment and affect your final results. It can also cause scarring. Let your skin do its thing naturally.
During these first 10 to 14 days, I also ask that you hold off on applying makeup or sunscreen directly on the tattooed area. Your skin needs to breathe and heal without anything interfering with that process. Once the flaking has subsided, usually around the two-week mark, you're clear to go back to your normal routine in that area.
Weeks 2 Through 8: The Deep Healing Phase
Just because the flaking has stopped doesn't mean your skin is fully healed. Beneath the surface, your skin is still doing important work. Full healing takes 6 to 8 weeks after each session, and this is the phase where the pigment truly settles into its final color and tone.
This is also why I always say: don't judge your results too early! It's common for the color to look lighter or softer during this middle phase before it fully reveals itself. By the time we hit that 6 to 8 week mark, what you see is what you've got — and most clients are absolutely thrilled.
Why the Perfecting Session Matters So Much
Here's the thing about healing: everyone's skin is different. Some people retain pigment beautifully after the first session, while others need a little more work in certain areas. Oily skin, sensitive skin, and lifestyle factors can all influence how things heal.
That's exactly why your 6 to 8 week perfecting session is included in the price of every service I offer. Once you're fully healed, we get together to assess the results with fresh eyes. We can fill in any areas that faded more than expected, fine-tune the shape, and adjust the color if needed. It's the finishing touch that takes your results from great to absolutely perfect.
A Few Healing Tips to Keep in Mind
To give your results the best possible chance of healing beautifully, here are a few things to keep in mind during recovery:
Keep the area dry in the first few days — avoid sweating heavily, swimming, or steaming
No picking or rubbing the treated area, no matter how tempting
Stay out of direct sun — UV exposure during healing can affect pigment retention
Follow your aftercare instructions — I send every client home with a kit and detailed guidance for a reason!
You've Got This
The healing process is temporary, but your results are long-lasting. A little patience in those first few weeks goes a long way toward making sure you're obsessed with your outcome. And remember, I'm always just a message away if you have questions or concerns during your healing journey.
